Why does the high school ‘Raider’ mascot look like Genghis Kahn and not a cowboy? (with updates)

I grew up with this Northfield Raider mascot on everything. It was on the basketball courts, painted through out the schools, on our jerseys, etc. It wasn’t until I was a junior or senior in high school did I think to question what it was or what it symbolized. I actually didn’t put two and two together about a “Raider” referring to the Jesse James Gang that raided our town in 1876. But why is he depicted of Asian decent? Who came up with this guy? There’s got to be some history out there about this. Please let me know if you have any guesses or historical background.

I love this one. The radio station was playing “In God’s Country” by U2 during some of the coldest wind-chill temps I had seen. Here’s the original post.
Driving to work this morning on the coldest day in Minnesota in 10 months I took out my camera she shot the drive. Amazing how packed and “white” the roads are. Surprisingly, in Minnesota we can get the road to a normal cement or black top look once temps get “up” into the twenties and react with the road salt. Well…I am driving in my pre-heated car and noticed the signs of extreme cold that I had forgotten about. The roads drift, sometimes it whites-out, exhaust pipes emit a fog and car windows are frosted over. It’s surreal but real, especially when the DJ shows some humor by playing U2′s “In God’s Country”. The air temp was actually about -10F with winds gusting up to 40 MPH, creating the wind-chill effect of a lifetime.
